Google Earth map overlay how to do it and the effect.
Adding an image overlay to Google Earth and then to generate a KMZ file is quite easy although to can get it a bit fiddly to really accurately place the image overlay.
If you have Google Earth, locate roughly where you wish to add an overlay then, "Add" and then "Image Overlay",
Name your overlay,
Browse for your image.
Then use the green markers to resize and or move the image to the desired location.
(The central cross allows movement of the image relative to Google Earth image, the sides and corner green lines can be "click, hold and drag" to resize the image)
Use the "Transparency" slider to help you during this excercise.
Only once the image is exactly where you desire should you press OK on the "Google Earth new" window.
To generate a KMZ file I just use the email facility within Google Earth.
Here is an example I have prepared showing Hillend near Edinburgh with an Ordnance Survey - Get-a-map overlay.
Hillend with overlay kmz file
The opacity of the overlay can be adjusted using the slider which will appear to the left of your image amongst your toolbars etc.
And a screen capture.
